Lucknow, June 13: In a shocking incident, a woman along with her husband attempted self-immolation near Vidhan Sabha in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. According to a recent tweet by ANI, the woman has levelled rape charges against a Samajwadi Party (SP) worker. The name of the worker is still not known.

According to a tweet by ANI, the victim's husband said that the woman (his wife) was raped 3 years ago in 2015 and no action has been taken yet.

"She was raped in 2015 and no action has been taken yet. He is threatening us to withdraw the case. I request his immediate arrest", the victim's husband was quoted by ANI.

In 2017, Samajwadi Party leader Gayatri Prajapati along with six co-accused were arrested in Lucknow after being accused of gangraping a woman and attempting to molest her minor daughter.  After the Supreme Court’s directive, the Lucknow police had lodged an FIR against Prajapati and six others on February 18, 2017.

In May, Samajwadi Party's general secretary Ramashankar Vidyarthi sparked a controversy by saying that women should wear stop wearing revealing clothes to prevent incidents of sexual assault.

Vidyarthi  fuurther added that mobile phones and internet are the reasons behind increasing cases of rape and molestation in the country. "Minor boys and girls should be barred from using mobile phones and Internet keeping in view the rising number of incidents of rape in the country," he said.
