New Delhi, Jan 30: Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan was appointed as the new Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on Tuesday. Chauhan will takeover the operations from Lt Gen AK Bhat, who was presiding over as the DGMO since November 28, 2016.
Chauhan was currently posted as the Commander, III Corps of the Indian Army -- the position he took charge from January 1, 2017. Known for his experience in counter-insurgency operations, Chauhan has served in both the regions of Jammu & Kashmir and the Northeastern states. In the Valley, he is best known for commanding the Baramulla-based 19 Infantry Division in 2014, which played a crucial role during the floods which ravaged the state that year.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy of Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy of Dehradun, Chauhan joined the forces in 1981, when he was commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles.
Apart from his notable role in J&K and Northeastern states, Chouhan has also been part of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Angola.
For his dedicated service, the Lt Gen has been awarded with the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal and the Vishisht Seva Medal.
