Escalating his attack on the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the poll rally in Shimoga said the party should be blamed for the "rise of PFI (Popular Front of India), SIMI (Students' Islamic Movement of India) in Karnataka.
While SIMI was banned under the erstwhile UPA government at Centre, no ban has been imposed so far on PFI. Sections of the ruling BJP have promised to ban the organisation after being voted to power in Karnataka.

One terrorist gunned down during an encounter with security forces in Chattabal area of Srinagar. The encounter has broken out in the morning. Earlier two terrorist were suspected to be holed up in a house in Chattabal. One Central Reserve Police Force jawan has also been injured during the encounter. The terrorist gunned down by the forces has not yet identified.

On Friday, The Supreme Court refused to interfere with the arrest of senior journalist Upendra Rai for dubious transactions in his accounts to the tune of over Rs 100 crore as a court sent him to three-day CBI custody. A bench of Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Ashok Bhushan refused to go through the application filed by Rai seeking protection. Rai, owner of Printlines Media Group and formerly employed with Tehelka, said he was framed in the case as he has been writing against an Enforcement Directorate official who was part of the team investigating the 2G spectrum allocation scam case.
In another news, The GST Council on Friday approved the rollout of a new simplified process under which a taxpayer will have to file a maximum of one GST return every month. For composition dealers and dealers with "nil transaction", only one return will have to be filed every quarter. The new system would be put in place within the next six months and another six months would be given to the taxpayers to make the complete transition, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced after the 27th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council
Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath returned from Karnataka to take stock of the situation after 73 people died due to dust storm and heavy rains.
