Liquor Ban in Mathura: Uttar Pradesh Government to Impose Ban on Alcohol Sale in Some Areas of The City

Mathura, June 5: The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday has imposed a complete ban in some areas of Mathura. As per the state government’s order, no liquor can be sold in Barsana, Baldev, Gokul, Govardhan, Nandgaon and Radha-kund of Mathura district. According to reports, 32 liquor shops in the area would also be relocated. After this move, the expected loss of the government would be around Rs 11 crores.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath chaired a cabinet meeting today, in which the decision to impose the ban in some places of holy city Mathura was taken. The complete liquor ban was also imposed in Vrindavan and Barsana last year in October as both the places were declared as pilgrimage sites.

After Vrindavan and Barsana were declared as pilgrim sites, the demand for declaring Mathura as a pilgrim site increased. Mathura has also a considerable Muslim population as compared to Vrindavan and Barsana. Meat shops in Mathura would also be banned in the region after such declaration.

The ban is likely to hamper the businesses of many in the region. Speaking over this, Radhe Shyam, a shopkeeper in Mathura had told the Economic Times, “There could be tensions in Mathura if the step is taken. There have been problems already after the closure of the illegal slaughterhouses after the new BJP government took charge.”
