The legal Service day is celebrated in India on November 9 to make people aware of the various provisions under the Legal Services Authorities Act and the right of the litigants. The aim of celebrating this day is also highlight that free of charge legal services are offered to the people belonging to the weaker sections of society.

The intention is also to make people conscious of the rights which they are entitled to. It thus highlights the message that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen on the basis of any grounds.

History & Significance of Legal Service Day

On this day, several legal literacy camps and functions are organised at many places in the country, especially in the backward and the tribal areas. People from the government, as well as the non-government organisations, take part in the functions and camps related to the Legal Services Day.

The day was first started by the Supreme Court in 1995 across the country to extend help and support to the weaker sections of people, who may be women, disabled people, Scheduled Tribes, children, Scheduled Castes, human trafficking victims as well as natural calamities victims. To spread awareness, each jurisdiction organises Lok Adalats, legal aid camps and legal aid programmes.
