New Delhi, October 19: To address staffing shortages and operational challenges, the Railway Board has launched a recruitment drive for 25,000 positions across various zones. Additionally, a scheme has been introduced to temporarily rehire retired railway employees under 65 years of age. The initiative aims to fill critical vacancies, especially in supervisory and track roles, as train accidents and workforce shortages have risen.
Under this new scheme, retired employees can apply for roles for a two-year period, with the possibility of extensions based on performance. General Managers in all railway zones have been authorised to hire these retirees, provided they meet medical fitness requirements and have strong performance ratings in their final five years of service. Candidates must also have no pending vigilance or disciplinary cases. Air India Airport Services Begins Recruitment for 1652 Posts, Check Selection Process and How to Apply at aiasl.in.
Rehired employees will receive a fixed monthly payment equal to their last drawn salary minus their basic pension. While they will be entitled to travel allowances for commuting and official tours, they will not receive extra benefits or salary increments. This scheme, effective from October 15, 2024, is part of an effort to fill the 2,61,233 vacancies in non-gazetted categories reported as of July 2023. Northern Railway leads with 32,468 vacancies, followed by Eastern, Western, and Central Railways.
The re-engagement period for retired staff is initially one year, with extensions possible based on performance. The contracts will end once newly selected candidates from Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) take over the roles. This program is expected to last for an initial two-year period to address urgent staffing needs.
