Labour Day, also known as International Workers’ Day and May Day, is celebrated on May 1 in India. The special day pays tribute and respect to workers across the nation.

Trivandrum, May 1:  To mark the importance of May Day, Kerala State Transport Corporation MD TJ Thachankary worked as a bus conductor on Tuesday.  According to a report by ANI, Thachankary was quoted saying, “Till the time I don't know the work they do how can I lead them? It'll also give me an opportunity to interact with commuters”.

Labour Day, also known as International Workers’ Day and May Day, is celebrated on May 1 in India. The special day pays tribute and respect to workers across the nation.

The concept of Labour Day in India was introduced by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan. Reports said that its leader, Comrade Singaravelar, first led celebrations on the occasion in Madras (now Chennai) on May 1, 1923, by holding two meetings, one at Triplicane beach and the other on the beach opposite the Madras High Court. The party passed a resolution stating that the government should grant workers a national holiday on May 1.

President of India Ram Nath Kovind on Twitter greeted people of India on the occasion of Labour Day, "On Labour Day, greetings and good wishes to our hardworking workers, both men and women. The discipline and dedication of our countless workers continue to build our country and lay the foundations for a new India. They are our true nation builders”, he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday dedicated the day to hard-working labourers During a rally in poll-bound Karnataka, the Prime Minister said, “I want to dedicate this day to our hardworking and diligent labours”. Meanwhile, Union Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday greeted workmen across India. He took to Twitter and said, "On this day we celebrate contributions and achievements of workers and reiterate their rights. I wish workers the very best and applaud their contributions to the economy”. aIn Mumbai, stock markets- Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), National Stock Exchange (NSE), forex, money will be closed today on account of 'Maharashtra Day'.
