Thiruvananthapuram, October 13: The Shiv Sena has threatened a mass suicide by its women workers if young women enter the Sabarimala Temple in Kerala. The Kerala wing of the Shiv Sena has said that they will hold the suicide protest on October 17 and 18. "Our women activists will gather near the Pamba river on 17th and 18th October as part of a suicide group. When any young woman tries to enter Sabarimala, our activists will commit suicide," said Kerala Shiv Sena leader Peringammala Aji. Meanwhile, gender equality activist Trupti Desai on Saturday said that she was still determined to visit the Sabarimala Temple. “We will announce a date very soon to visit the Sabarimala Temple as the apex court has upheld the fundamental rights of women. There should be no attempt to stop us because we now have equal rights,” Desai said while speaking to a Malayalam TV channel in Mumbai.
The Supreme Court last month ruled that women of all ages can enter the Sabarimala Temple. There have been massive protests will many devotees expressing anger against the Supreme Court verdict.
On Friday, Malayalam actor Kollam Thulasi said using an analogy of how Lord Krishna killed Jarasandha, "Women coming to Sabarimala temple should be ripped in half. One half should be sent to Delhi and the other half should be thrown to Chief Minister's office in Thiruvananthapuram." A case has been filed against him for his statement.
The Travancore Devaswom Board on the other has clarified that no new toilet facilities would be arranged for women pilgrims, who have been allowed to visit the Sabarimala temple in Kerala following the landmark Supreme Court order. The Board had earlier assured that it would be constructing new toilet facilities, and ensure the deployment of female police personnel, as scores of women are expected to throng the iconic Ayyappa temple with the ban on their entry being uplifted.
