Seven Indian states celebrate their formation day on November 1. The states include Rajasthan, Karnataka, Kerala, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana. The union territories of Lakshwadeep, Puducherry, Andaman & Nicobar also celebrate their formation day on Thursday. Events or programs related to Kerala Formation Day or Kerala Piravi are held across the state. Before India received independence, Kerala was a compilation of three independent provinces namely Malabar, Cochin and Travancore.
On 62nd anniversary of Kerala Piravi, people took to Twitter wishing the state progress and prosperity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kerala MP Shashi Tharoor Kerala, Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan among many others wished the state and its people. Kerala originally gets its name after the first ruler, Keralian Thamboran, who ruled one of these independent provinces during the earlier times. The contribution of a popular movement known as Aikya Kerala played the catalyst for the reorganisation of the state on a linguistic basis. The State Reorganisation Act which led to the formation of Kerala was also responsible for defining borders of other Indian states including Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Bombay state and more. After Independence, a federal structure of governance formed the state borders on the basis of the historical and political background. Later in 1956, the borders were redrawn based on linguistic history. On November 1, 1956, language was the official parameter in deciding the borders of the states in India.
