Mumbai, January 23: The owner of Mumbai’s Kamala Mills compound, Ramesh Gowani will be under police custody till January 29, 2018 in connection with the fire that claimed 14 lives on December 29, 2017. Gowani was arrested by Mumbai police on Monday under IPC section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The owner was being questioned by the police soon after he was arrested.  Gowani’s detention comes just days after Kamala Mills director Ravi Bhandari, fire officer Rajendra Patil and hookah supplier Utkarsh Pandey were arrested for the same offence.

As per reports by PTI, Gowani was travelling in a car when he was intercepted at suburban Chembur by a team of the N M Joshi Marg police station.  S Jaykumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Central Region) said, “We have arrested Gowani under IPC section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder)”.

To recall, Gowani was booked for the offence under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act.  All the arrests in connection with the deadly Kamala Mills fire were made after civic chief Ajoy Mehta, in his report to the Maharashtra chief minister, mentioned about the factors which caused the tragedy. Report state that the fire started because of flying charcoal embers from hookah which was illegally served at Mojo's Bistro, which then spread to 1 Above.  All owners of the two pubs had been booked and arrested.

In the last week, Yug Tuli, co-owner of Mojo's Bistro pub surrendered before the Mumbai Police after evading arrests over the past few weeks. Tuli, a Nagpur based businessman and his partner Yug Pathak, the son of former Pune Police Commissioner K K Pathak, were booked under sections of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. With Tuli’s arrest, all the owners of the Mojo’s Bistro and ‘1 Above’ have been arrested.
