INX Media Case: Karti Chidambaram Sent to 1-Day Police Custody by Delhi Court
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday in a remand application had sought 15-days custody of Karti in connection with money laundering case.
New Delhi, February 28: The Delhi Patiala House Court on Wednesday sent Karti Chidambaram-son of former Union minister P Chidambaram to 1 day police custody in connection with INX Media case. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday in a remand application had sought 15-days custody of Karti in connection with money laundering case.
Karti was arrested by the CBI officials at Chennai airport while he returned from his London trip. The CBI then flew him from Chennai to Delhi to produce him before the court today. Earlier the CBI had filed a case against Karti after the Enforcement Directorate alleged irregularities in granting foreign direct investment clearance to a media company named INX Media.
In May 2017, the CBI had filed a case against Karti while the Enforcement Directorate, carried out a string of raids since on the houses and offices owned by the Chidambarams. The FIR had alleged irregularities in Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs305 crore in 2007 when Karti’s father was the finance minister.
BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said CBI gave Karti a lot of chances but he continued with his lies even after all evidence was presented against him. “He will certainly go to jail & chargesheet will be filed by the CBI," Swamy said. To recall, the money laundering case allegedly involving Karti had first reached the Supreme Court after the CBI had challenged the stay granted by Madras high court on two look out circulars (LOCs) issued against the accused.
The Congress has termed Karti's sudden arrest as an act 'diversionary tactic' by the BJP to reduce attention around the recent bank frauds in the country. Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, “Out of the blue arrest is made today, 11 years after the so-called incident & submission of all documents. FIR till today does not mention or name Karti Chidambaram as an accused”
