Mumbai, August 29: In a significant boost to India’s maritime strength, the second Arihant-Class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, INS Arighaat, was commissioned into the Indian Navy. The ceremony, held in Visakhapatnam, saw the presence of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Vice Admiral Suraj Berry, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, and senior DRDO officials.
The Arihant-Class submarines, named after the Sanskrit term “Destroyer of the Enemy,” symbolise their strategic importance. The name “Arihant” was chosen for its aptness and subtle expression of commitment. INS Arighaat Commissioned: India Gets 2nd Nuclear Ballistic Submarine (See Pics).
All About INS Arighaat, India’s 2nd Nuclear Ballistic Submarine
Built by the Shipbuilding Centre (SBC) in Visakhapatnam, INS Arighaat is an upgraded version of INS Arihant. It can achieve a maximum submerged speed of 24 knots (44 km/h) and 12–15 knots (22–28 km/h) on the surface. The submarine features four launch tubes capable of carrying twelve K-15 SLBMs with a range of 750 kilometres or up to four nuclear-armed K-4 SLBMs with a range exceeding 3,500 kilometres.
INS Arighaat, powered by an 83 MW pressurized light-water reactor, offers a significant advantage over conventional submarines by remaining submerged for extended periods. This capability enhances India’s nuclear deterrence and strategic balance in the region.
