New Delhi, April 25: Senior Supreme Court advocate Indu Malhotra on Wednesday became the first woman lawyer to be elevated as as a judge of the apex court.

Malhotra was among the two names recommended by the Collegium -- the other being the Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court, KM Joseph. The Centre is yet to approve the latter's appointment, reportedly due to the graft allegations levelled against him.

Malhotra, 62, was also the second female advocate from the Bar who was designated as a "senior" lawyer of the top court in 2007.

With over 30 years of experience in the judicial circles, she has specialised into the law of conciliation, and has appeared in various domestic and international commercial arbitrations. Malhotra has also authored the third edition of 'The Law and Practice of Arbitration and Conciliation', which was released in April, 2014.

In December 2016, Malhotra was appointed a member of the High Level Committee (HLC) by the Ministry of Law and Justice to review the Institutionalisation of Arbitration Mechanism in India.

Apart from her noted contribution in the judicial circles, the veteran advocate is also a part of the academia, with her stint of teaching at the Lady Shri Ram College affiliated to the Delhi University.
