Hyderabad, March 14: Low-fare carrier IndiGo’s Hyderabad-Raipur flight landed back at Hyderabad airport shortly after taking off on Wednesday. As per details available, the flight experienced a minor technical glitch/over limit EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) with its engine 1. The matter is being investigated by IndiGo Flight Safety team and DGCA.
The incident comes after DCGA on Monday asked IndiGo and GoAir to ground planes powered by a specific series of Pratt & Whitney engines following in-flight engine failures. The decision to ground 45 aircraft with faulty engines was taken for safety concerns arising out of the mid-air shut down of the Pratt& Whitney- manufactured Neo engines of these aeroplanes.
The decision came after a Lucknow-bound IndiGo flight faced a mid-air scare earlier in the day. On Tuesday, the two carriers-IndiGo and GoAir cancelled at least 65 flights, with IndiGo scrapping at least 47. Due to the DCGA recent move, cancellation of Indigo and GoAir flights has put thousands of passengers at inconvenience.
On Wednesday, IndiGo and GoAir cancelled around 50 flights as almost one-third of their A320 Neo aircraft fleet remained grounded for the third day following a safety directive by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). To recall, IndiGo operates over 1,000 daily flights while GoAir offers 230 services daily.
There are a total of 45 A320 Neo planes fitted with P&W engines with the two airlines. Of these, IndiGo has 33 and GoAir 12 planes. IndiGo announced on its website that it has cancelled 42 flights for 14 March which includes flights to Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, Jaipur, Srinagar, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Dehradun, Amritsar, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, among others. However, GoAir said it had cancelled a total of six flights due to the grounding of three of its A320 Neo planes, as against 18 on Tuesday.
