Kolkata, Mar 30: An Indian research student, part of an official expedition to the Antarctica, died after meeting an accident in the frozen continent. The deceased, identified as Suvojit Sen, is survived by his father, mother and elder brother - all residing in West Bengal's Purulia.
Suvojit, 23, was employed by the Goa-based National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR). In October last year, he was selected to be a part of the 37th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica.
Suvojit was expected to return home in the first week of April. He last conversed with his family on March 24, said brother Subhankar.
According to Subhankar, he was informed about Suvojit's death on March 27. He, however, could break the news to his family only on Thursday.
According to the NCAOR, the convoy of which Suvojit was a part, met an accident while they were moving towards the Ice Shelf, located 80-km away from the Maitri, the Indian Research Base at the Antarctica.
"He met with an accident during convoy operations at Ice Shelf and suffered major trauma late March 26. He was immediately rushed towards the expedition vessel and doctors joined with medical help. Unfortunately, attempts to revive him went in vain," the NCAOR said in its statement.
Suvojit, an IIT-Bhubaneswar graduate, was among the handful of students across the nation who were selected by the NCAOR. He was about to turn 24-years-old on April 13, his brother recalls.
