New Delhi, November 30: Much to the happiness of passengers travelling by trains, the Indian Railways has rolled out an initiative that would end the trouble of passengers in the waiting list. Reports inform that from January 2019, even if a railway ticket is cancelled after the train has departed from its source station, the information will be directly sent to the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE). The ticket checker, with the help of hand-held terminal devices, will be able to allot vacant seats to the passengers in waiting list on the subsequent stations, a report by Financial Express said.  Indian Railways' Steam Express Train Journey Ticket Costs Only Rs 10!

In a bid to enhance passenger-friendly amenities and ensure hassle-free travel, the Indian Railways, under the leadership of Union Minister Piyush Goyal, has used this initiative as a pilot project in some Shatabdi Express and Rajdhani Express trains. According to a report by Financial Express, the project will now be implemented on other trains too. First Passenger Train in India ran 165 Years ago.

How will the new initiative work?

Till date, the TTE used to wait for the passenger for the next two stations to see if they turn up. Despite vacant seats, waitlisted passengers were unable to get seats. Reports inform that for this facility, the TTEs will be provided with hand-held terminal devices. These devices will be directly connected to the railway server. The Financial Express report further states that every update on the tickets will be immediately sent to the terminal.

The new system is believed to help waiting list passengers get seats if no passenger turns up. With the new service in place, if a ticket is cancelled by the passenger, the TTE would be immediately notified. Once the terminal is updated, the waitlisted passengers will be assigned to confirmed seats. Also, the refund on cancellation of tickets will start immediately.

The report informs that the terminal devices will be handed over to TTEs of all other Mail and Express trains once the project is implemented in all Shatabdi, Rajdhani and Duronto Express trains. The work will be done in two phases as it will be difficult for the Railways to provide a large number of hand-held terminal devices to all the TTEs at once. In the first phase, about 500 hand-held terminal devices will be provided to TTEs while nearly 8000 devices will be given in the second phase.
