The Proteas began their day with Kasigo Rabada and Hasim Amla at the crease with the overnight score reading 6 for 1. Opener Aiden Markram was the first batsman to fall, with pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar providing the early breakthrough.
Kagiso Rabada came in as nightwatchman on Day 1 as he was promoted up the order. The fast-bowler survived a gusty bowling spell by the Indian fast-bowlers, aided by swing and bounce on the pitch that looked menacing. He helped his team with a vital 64-run partnership with batsman Hashim Amla and frustrated India to the core. Finally, it was Ishant Sharma who broke the vital partnership.
Wickets fell in a bunch for the Proteas as AB De Villiers, Quinton De Kock and skipper Faf Du Plessis all fell in quick succession. South Africa was cruising comfortably at 80 for 2, before slumping to 125 for 6. It was again Amla who steadied their ship and this time it was all-rounder Vernon Philander on the other end who offered much-needed support. They stitched a 44 runs partnership for the seventh wicket before both of them fell in quick succession soon after.
The South African lower-order batsmen had no clue to Jasprit Bumrah's clever bowling. The hosts were bundled up on for 194, as they managed to take a slender lead in form of just 7 runs. Hashim Amla emerged as their top scorer as he scored 61, while Philander was second and Rabada third with 35 runs and 30 runs against their names respectively.
For the Indian bowlers, it was Jasprit Bumrah's who lead the fight with the figures of 5 for 54, followed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar's crucial 3 for 44. Ishant Sharma and Mohammad Shami took a wicket each.
The Indian openers, Murali Vijay and Parthiv Patel started cautiously. Patel played aggressively and helped India to wipe off the small lead soon. However, he departed for 16 after he edged to third slip to give Philander his first wicket.
KL Rahul and Murali Vijay sailed through tough playing conditions as South African bowlers kept the pressure on from both sides, stemming the flow of runs. The openers survived many testing moments from the fiery Proteas' bowlers and ensured that there wasn't any other wicket given away. Both the batsman played the remaining say out and saw India home as the visitors ended their day on 49 runs for the loss of 1 wicket.
