The state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has been bifurcated as Union Territories (UTs). On Monday, the Centre informed the Parliament that Jammu and Kashmir would become a Union Territory (UT) with a Legislature and Ladakh will be a different UT without a Legislature. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also informed Parliament that Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, that gives special status to J&K, will be abrogated through Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order 2019. With the latest changes, India will now have 28 States and nine Union Territories, which was 29 states and 7 UTs earlier. Jammu and Kashmir no Longer a State; in Historic Move by Modi Govt, J&K to be Union Territory With Legislative Assembly, Ladakh to be UT Without One.

With this Kashmir and Ladakh will become Union Territories, while Ladakh will not have its own Assembly. The government on Monday imposed restrictions under section 144 Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in Srinagar district with effect from midnight, which shall remain in force till further orders.
