Hyderabad, April 14: In another fraudulent attack online, a resident of Hyderabad lost Rs 1 lakh while filing his Income Tax Return (ITR) recently. The Rachakonda Cyber Crime Police noted that the 30-year-old professor in a city college fall victim to a phishing e-mail.
The e-mail contents had a link where the victim could file his online income-tax returns. The link led the city-college professor to an identical IT webpage where he filled his information and eventually lost his money.
S Harinath, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crime), Rachakonda said that the police is expecting more such cases as a lot of people will file their ITRs in July, later this year. The police official further added that not only the victim but also his colleagues were sent a similar (phishing) e-mail too.
The Cyber Police told that a lot of such fraudulent cases happen; since the amount is too small nobody files a complaint. When the amount is relatively higher, people file complaints. However, since the amount was in lakhs this time, a complaint with the Cyber Police was filed.
Talking about the measures people have to take while indulging in a transaction online, the Police officer said that they should pay more attention to the websites addresses (URLs – Uniform Resource Locator), as they identical and very much similar to the original ones. Like for instance, Facebook.com may be displayed as Faceb00k.com or Facebook-.com.
