A few days back, the Director of the Tripura government's Information Department said that the government proposed to replace the local Tripuri language called Kokborok, by Hindi in news bulletins on radio and TV so that people outside the state can get to know about Tripura. The intention is also to promote nationalism. Reportedly, several political parties of Tripura, including CPI (M) and the Congress have criticised the reported proposal. Reportedly the government has said that no such decision was taken.

According to reports, Congress president Birajit Sinha said his party was opposed to any move that would undermine the priority of Kokborok language. As per reports, CPI(M) has also condemned the proposal, saying Hindi may be promoted but not at the cost of the indigenous Kokborok.

Tripura CM, Biplab Deb, has been in the middle of many controversies, post his unwanted statements on everything. His last irrational comment was where he threatened to chop off nails of anyone trying to poke fingers at his government. Reportedly, he was summoned by PM Modi and BJP President Amit Shah.
