Himanshu Roy Commits Suicide: What Do We Know about Mumbai’s Top Cop? His Early Life and Career

Himanshu Roy's family members were at the same house when he pulled the trigger of his service revolver and killed himself. He was immediately rushed to the Bombay Hospital in South Mumbai where doctors declared him dead.

Mumbai, May 11: It is a black day for Maharashtra Police Force as one of the Mumbai's top cops Himanshu Roy, the Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, killed himself with his service revolver on Friday. The 1988 cadre IPS officer was currently serving as Maharashtra's Additional Directorate General Police (ADGP) was on a long medical leave, as he was suffering from cancer. However, the reason for taking this extreme step is unknown. While it's believed that he was under depression due his ailing health.

Roy during his service cracked several prominent high-profile crime cases. The ones which grabbed the eyeballs of all national television news channel headlines was the Indian Premier League (IPL) spot-fixing scandal and arresting actor Vindu Dara Singh for his alleged involvement and connection with the bookies. Also, he investigated the sensational murder case of Laila Khan and five of her relatives at their Igatpuri Bungalow, during his tenure as Joint Commissioner of Mumbai police from 2010 to 2014. After his appointment as Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS), he arrested software engineer Anees Ansari for allegedly planning to blow up the American School at Bandra Kurla Complex(BKC).

Career:

Himanshu Roy, a top cop in entire Maharashtra IPS cadre started his career in the police force as an SP of Nasik (rural) in 1995, then SP Ahmednagar, DCP Economic Offences Wing, DCP Traffic, DCP Zone 1, and Commissioner of Police, Nasik, 2004-2007, where he tackled Khairlanji massacre- the murders of the Bhotmange family members by the politically-dominant upper caste people. In quick succession after this, he was posted as Jt. Commissioner of Police Mumbai in 2009. Later he served in Cyber Crime Cell, posted as the chief of Maharashtra ATS and then as Additional Director General of Police of Maharashtra, which after his death, proved to be his last designation held in the police force.

The reason behind Himanshu Roy's Death:

The reason for his death is yet to be ascertained, however, he was under severe depression for his ailing health since he was known to be suffering from cancer. It's believed his family members were at the same house when he pulled the trigger of his service revolver and killed himself. He was rushed to Bombay Hospital in South Mumbai where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Besides, its also been alleged that the reason behind his ailing health was his obsession for a good physique. It's been claimed that he used to take supplements and steroids, which led his poor health.

During his service, Roy established the first special cell for crimes related to women. Also, he pioneered the set-up of the first cyber cell, devising effective anti-dacoity measures in rural Maharashtra.

Other sensational cases which he investigated include firing on gangster Dawood Ibrahim's brother Iqbal Kaskar's driver Arif Bael, journalist J Dey murder case, the double murder case involving Vijay Palande and the murder of law graduate Pallavi Purkhayasta.
