Mumbai, May 11: Senior Mumbai Police officer and former chief of Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Himanshu Roy on Friday committed suicide. The 55-year-old 'supercop' reportedly shot himself dead using his service revolver at around 1:45 pm.
Roy was rushed to the Bombay hospital at Marine Lines, where he was declared dead on arrival. Although the exact reason behind him committing suicide is yet to be ascertained, reports claim the police officer was depressed after being reeling under cancer for the past few months.
Roy, who was last posted as Additional Director General of Police (Housing), was on an extended leave since the past six months. Here's a look back at his career graph, which witnessed a meteoric rise.
Postings of Himanshu Roy
The 1988-batch IPS began his career as Superintendent of Police in Malegaon in 1991. He was credited for thwarting the impact of post-Babri Masjid riots in the region with a sizeable Muslim population.
In 1995, Roy was deputed as the youngest SP of Nashik (Rural). Over the next decade, he held several key posts including SP Ahmednagar, DCP Economic Offences Wing, DCP Traffic, DCP Zone 1.
Between 2004-07, Roy presided over as the Police Commissioner of Nashik.
His career witnessed a further ascent in 2009, when he was appointed as Joint Commissioner of Police, Mumbai.
Between 2013-14, Roy headed the Maharashtra ATS. Later, he was deputed as ADG (Housing) -- the post he last served before taking an extended medical leave.

Roy cracked major cases in Mumbai region including the attack on Arif Baeel, the driver of gangster Dawood Ibrahim's brother Iqbal Kaskar. As JCP of Mumbai Police, he presided over teams which solved journalist J Dey's killing case, double murder case involving serial killer Vijay Palande,
firing on Dawood's brother Iqbal Kaskar's driver Arif Bael, Journalist J Dey murder case, the double murder case involving Vijay Palande and assassination of Pakistan-origin model Laila Khan. In 2013, Roy was also handed over the case of IPL betting, which involved actor Vindoo Dara Singh and former BCCI secretary N Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan. The most recent case solved by Roy was of law graduate Pallavi Purkhayasta's murder.

Roy was born in Mumbai on June 23, 1963. He studied at the highly acclaimed Campion School, before pursuing undergraduate education at the prestigious St Xavier's College.
Although he was initially inclined towards entering the medical realm, following the footsteps of his father, who was a known doctor, Roy decided to drop out and pursue a career of Chartered Accountant.
In 1985, he cleared the CA exams. However, Roy decided to contribute towards the society and chose civil services. In 1990, he cleared the examinations to be certified as Indian Police Service or IPS officer.
Roy's wife Bhavna had met him at the IPS final examination hall in Mumbai, where she was attempting the IAS test. The duo got married in 1991. Bhavna, the sister of renowned Amish Tripathi, also went on to become an IAS. However, she decided to quit the services and work as a social activist.
