Shopian, June 4: At least 12 people and four policemen were injured in a grenade attack in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. An unidentified person hurled a grenade at security personnel at Batapora Chownk.
“Militants today afternoon lobbed a grenade at Shopian in Batapora area which exploded inflicting injuries to several civilians and few policemen. The grenade exploded along the roadside amid the civilian population,” reported Hindustan Times quoting a police spokesperson as saying. A young girl received critical injuries in the explosion. She was moved to a hospital. The entire area was cordoned off by the police. Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
Former Chief Minister of the state took to twitter to criticise the attack. Abdullah termed the attack as an act of cowardice.
On Monday Afternoon, Jammu and Kashmir Police also defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by terrorists in Baramulla's Sopore. Attacks on security forces have increased during the month of Ramzan even though the Centre suspended security operations in Kashmir Valley to observe the holy month in a peaceful environment.
Eight people including four paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers and an equal number of civilians were injured on June 2 in three grenade attacks carried out by terrorists at three locations in Srinagar.
