A major accident averted on Sunday early morning during the ongoing extension work of Sarvarkar bridge, after a girder along with a crane collapsed. However, to avoid any such future mishap the Mumbai traffic department has closed the Sarvarkar bridge at MTNL Junction for commuters travelling to or from Goregoan East and West. No vehicular movement is allowed till Tuesday 5 am morning.
Meanwhile, the Traffic Department has suggested alternate route to citizens, if they are travelling towards Goregaon West they can take Mrunal Tai Gore flyover or Mahatma Gandhi (MG) Road. Similarly, people travelling towards east can take Malad Subway or Mrunal Tai Gore flyover via link road, MG Road.
Deepak J Thakur, the local Corporator of the area from Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) said, "Though people have to undergo inconvenience now, but once the bridge work is completed it will provide major relief to them. The bridge will ease the traffic congestion over here."
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is undertaking the bridge extension work. According to civic information the work started in the year 2015, but,due to delay in getting No Objection Certificate (NOC) from traffic department to carry out the work, the project got delayed. However, civic body is expecting to complete the work by this monsoon. The new extended bridge will be 500 metres long.
