Goa: Two People Hospitalised After Ammonia Gas Leak, Nearby Village of Vasco City Evacuated
As per police reports, a tanker carrying Ammonia gas and proceeding towards Zuari Industries at Zuarinagar fell into a roadside ditch and overturned near SAG ground at around 2.45 am.
Vasco, January 19: Two people have been hospitalised after a tanker carrying ammonia overturned on the nearby highway in Goa's Vasco city in the early hours of Friday. There have been no serious casualties except for the hospitalisation of the two old women. As per reports, the deadly incident took place on the highway that connects Goa’s Vasco City to Panaji. As per police reports, a tanker carrying ammonia gas going towards Zuari Industries at Zuarinagar fell into a roadside ditch and overturned near SAG ground at around 2.45 am.
"The tanker carrying ammonia overturned at around 2.45 a.m. and the gas started leaking from it. Police, Fire, and Emergency Services were directed to raise an alarm and evacuate the entire area," Deputy Collector Mahadev Arondekar told PTI.
Following the ammonia gas leakage, hundreds of residents of a village in Vasco city were evacuated. The highway crossing through Chicalim village has been blocked and the traffic diverted through other roads. Initial reports state that, at least people have been rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Reports state that the tanker was carrying ammonia from Mormugao Port Trust to Zuari Industries Limited, both located in Vasco. “The disaster response teams were sent to the site immediately while police and fire and emergency service personnel were asked to wake up the people and evacuate the entire area,” Deputy Collector Mahadev Arondekar was quoted as saying by PTI.
Reports state that about 300 houses are located in the area where the incident took place. A senior official said that the two women had to be shifted to a nearby hospital as they complained of breathlessness. The official added that they were sleeping inside their house which is close to the accident spot.
