Mumbai, April 10: PM Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, will visit Champaran district, in Bihar, to attend the closing ceremony of the centenary of ‘Champaran Satyagraha’. PM Modi’s will mark the end of the grand event which was organised by the Bihar government. Modi’s visit will also see him inaugurate a lot of developmental projects during the Champaran event. Along with it, PM Modi is slated to award top volunteers of ‘Swachchh Bharat Mission’, in one of the many events planned during his visit.
Commemorating the 100-years of the historic event – Mahatma Gandhi’s Satyagraha in Champaran in 1917 – the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government had launched the centenary celebrations in Champaran in April last year. We at LatestLY bring to you the details of PM Modi’s visit to Champaran on April 10.
1. Swacchta Satyagraha:
Within months after taking office, PM Narendra Modi had announced the launch of ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyan’. During his visit to Champaran, PM Modi will address over 20,000 Swachhagrahis during the event. DM Raman Kumar said, “A sprawling tent-city ‘Swacchagram has been set up to accommodate volunteers from other states.
Swachhagrahis, or Ambassadors of Cleanliness, are often known as ‘foot soldiers’, who motivate people in villages to implement the Community Approaches to Sanitation (CAS). PM Modi will award top ten Swachhagrahis who have performed exceedingly well in their villages.
2. Flag-off Humsafar Express and 12,000 HP Locomotive amongst other projects:
The Prime Minister is slated to flag-off a new bi-weekly train, Humsafar Express, which will connect Katihar to New Delhi. India’s first 12,000 HP freight electric locomotive will be flagged-off on the occasion too. Also, during his visit, PM Modi will also launch the electrification work of Motihari-Muzzaffarpur rail-line.
Not only that, the work to double the railway track lines from Muzaffarpur to Sagauli, and onwards to Gange; will be given a go-ahead too. PM Modi will also dedicate the first phase of the Madhepura Electric Locomotive factory, a collaboration between India and France, to the nation.
3. Sewage Projects:
PM Modi will also lay the foundation stones for four sewerage plants during his visit to Motihari town on Tuesday. The four sewage projects, worth Rs. 1,156 crores, aim at creating a sewage-treatment capacity of 60 million litres daily (MLD). One of the projects will include a 376.12-km sewer network in Saidpur and Pahari sewerage zones. The official statements read, “Once these projects are completed, no sewage water from Patna will flow into the Ganga and the sewer lines reach every household in the town.”
4. Other Projects:
During his visit to Bihar, later today, PM Modi will also launch several other projects in the state aiming to improve the infrastructure in the state. PM Modi will inaugurate Motijheel Project and Bettiah Nagar Parishad Water Supply scheme under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) amongst other projects.
Celebrating the centenary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had attended a similar program ‘Swachhagraha - Bapu Ko Karyanjali’, last year. Also, an exhibition was organised by the government to showcase the historic Champaran Satyagraha, where PM Modi had recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership and his focus on cleanliness.
The historic event, ‘Champaran Satyagraha’ was launched by Mahatma Gandhi on April 10, in the year 1917. The movement was against the British Raj then, who had forced the farmers to undertake cultivation of Indigo.
