Mumbai, June 26: Helping others is always appreciated. However, sometimes helping others can also get one in trouble. Especially if you fall on the wrong side of the law. In one such case in Mumbai, Nitin Nair had to pay Rs 2000 fine, after he was booked for giving a lift to strangers, during heavy rainfall. The traffic police constable, who booked the man for giving a lift to strangers, has been transferred to the administration section, according to a record in the Times of India.
The report also mentions that a preliminary enquiry has been ordered against the constable, confirmed a police inspector at Vashi police station.
The whole incident came in the public light after Nitin Nair, the man who was fined, shared his ordeal in a post on Facebook. Here is the what Nitin wrote in his post on Facebook:
The traffic law he learnt, shows that giving a lift to strangers in private vehicles is illegal, meaning carpooling is also illegal. But is the law really practical and what is the situation regarding the awareness of the law? A law needs to be first made adequately public before it is strictly imposed. The traffic cop learnt it the hard way. Hope others will learn from it too.
