Lucknow, April 10: Pappu Yadav, the father of the Unnao girl allegedly raped by a BJP MLA, died yesterday after succumbing to 'shock and septicaemia', said the post-mortem reported released on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old deceased was assaulted six days ago by Atul Singh, the brother of rape-accused lawmaker from Bangarmau, Kedar Singh Sengar, along with his accomplices.

Yadav was not only assaulted, but handed over to the police after registering a case against him at the Makhi police station. The rape victim claims her father was denied medical treatment by the jail authorities over the past five days which deteriorated his condition.

Yadav was rushed to the Unnao district hospital on Sunday after the jail officials found him under severe abdominal pain. On Monday morning, he was reported dead.

The autopsy report said he was struck with 14 blows on his body during the assault, each of them were fatal. The exact cause of death is reported to be the injuries caused in his abdominal region.

"In all, 14 injuries were found on the body of the deceased. He died of shock and septicaemia and perforation in ascending colon (large intestine)," Unnao's Chief Medical Officer Dr SP Chaudhary was reported as saying by HT.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday ordered the suspension of the erring jail officials, apart from ordering an inquiry into the matter by a Special Investigation Team.

Earlier in the day, the SIT arrested Atul Singh on charges of assault against Yadav. His brother, the accused BJP MLA, was also interrogated by the SIT officials.

The Samajwadi Party staged demonstrations against the UP government in Lucknow, demanding action against the accused lawmaker. The party also charged CM Adityanath of shielding the tainted MLA.

The state government has also been slapped with a notice by the  National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which took suo moto cognizance of the rape victim's death after being taken into judicial custody by Unnao police.
