Chandigarh, June 5: Amid the ongoing 10-day protest called out by several farmers' organisations across the nation, farmers in Punjab have decided called off the agitation on June 6, four days ahead of the scheduled date. It must be noted that the farmers’ agitation in the other states will end on June 10, as it has been planned.
According to a report by News 18, during a press conference held in Ludhiana on Monday, four farmer organisations from Punjab jointly declared to end the agitation on June 6. The reports inform that State president of Bharti Kisan Union Balbir Singh Rajewal alleged that the government was trying to make farmers fight among themselves because of which it has been decided to call off the agitation early on June 6.
The protest took a violent turn after the state witnessed farmers spilling milk and throwing vegetables on the roads instead of selling their produce to the mandis. Several clashes were also reported between general public and farmers in several parts of the state.
Several farmers’ organisations have joined the 10-day protest for pressing their demands over farmers’ loan waiver and higher prices for their produce. The farmers are also demanding the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission recommendations among other demands. The protest started on June 1, across 22 states in the country demanding remunerative prices for their produce.
