Mumbai, April 11: A 50-year-old farmer, hailing from Yavatmal, allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday. The debt-ridden farmer ended his life by consuming poison over rising debts and crop failure. In his suicide note, the farmer has blamed the Narendra Modi-led central government and its policies for his death.

The deceased farmer, identified as Shankar Bhaurao Chayre, was under the debt of Rs. 1 lakh. Shankar Chayre had not got any benefit from the loan waiver scheme announced by the Maharashtra government. Being upset with the manner in which the funds were disbursed in the loan waiver scheme, the farmer resorted to ending his life.

Shankar Chayre was rushed to the nearby government hospital after he had consumed pesticide and collapsed. The police have said that the actual reason for the death has not been ascertained yet. Post-mortem reports of the alleged suicide case were awaited.

The deceased farmer belonged to Rajurwadi village in Ghatanji tehsil of Yavatmal district in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. In his six-page suicide note, Chayre also requested the Minister of State Home Affairs Hansraj Ahir, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and BJP MLA Raju Todsam to provide assistance to his family members.

The family has refused to take the body of the deceased farmer back for performing last rites and rituals. Also, they have demanded to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi over this matter. As per the reports, Yavatmal district is one of worst affected regions in the state of Maharashtra, which has seen one of the highest suicide cases of debt-ridden farmers.
