Earthquake in Delhi and North India: Strong Tremors Felt, Afghanistan and Pakistan Affected

As per initial reports, the jolts originated from East of Kunduz, Afghanistan.

New Delhi, January 31: Earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR region on Wednesday afternoon.  As per initial reports by EMSC (European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre), the epicentre of the quake was Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region.  The quake, which was also felt in neighbouring India and Pakistan, struck 270 km (167 miles) northeast of Kabul in the Hindu Kush mountains, at a deep 180 km.

The magnitude of the earthquake is reported to be 6.1 on Richter Scale.  As per ANI reports, at least one person died and several others injured in Balochistan's Lasbela.  No casualties have been reported in India. Tremors have also been felt in northern states of India including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana.

VK Gehlot, Director, National Center for Seismology was quoted by ANI saying,  "Earthquake of magnitude 6.2 occurred in Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, it had a depth of over 190 km and hence was felt in Delhi & quite strongly in Kashmir also".

As per details available, the first reports were received from Uttar Pradesh’s Noida while strong tremors were felt in Punjab. Afghanistan and Pakistan also felt the tremors this afternoon. The tremors were repeatedly for around 1 minute.

Incidentally, today January 31, 2018 is also a Super Blue Blood Moon Day with Solar Eclipse and there were major earthquake warnings already announced.
