Dense Fog Continues to Engulf Delhi and Parts of North India, Train Services Affected Due to Low Visibility
Train services have also been affected due to poor visibility in the national capital. As per reports, as many as 18 trains were cancelled, 43 were delayed and 7 others were rescheduled on Sunday.
New Delhi, January 28: For the third consecutive day today, parts of northern India were engulfed in thick, dense fog leading to low visibility. The blanket of fog covered the national capital, regions of East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on Sunday morning. The MeT department has forecast rains or snowfall in isolated places on Sunday in Kashmir and fairly widespread downpour on Monday. Train services have also been affected due to poor visibility in the national capital. As per reports, as many as 18 trains were cancelled, 43 were delayed and 7 others were rescheduled on Sunday.
On Sunday, Delhi recorded the minimum temperature settling at 8.2 degrees Celsius in the national capital. The weatherman has predicted skies to remain clear through the day while the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 18 degrees Celsius and 8 degrees Celsius respectively. In Kashmir, mercury stayed several degrees below the freezing point in most parts of the valley.
On Saturday, Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.2 degrees Celsius while the mercury at the ski-resort of Gulmarg settled at minus 8.3 degrees Celsius. Kargil continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 15 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological (MeT) department has forecast the dry spell in the region to end in the next couple of days in the valley.
Jammu and Kashmir is currently under the grip of Chillai-Kalan- which is a 40-day harshest period of winter when the chances of snowfall are most frequent and maximum, and the temperature drops considerably. It ends on January 31, but cold wave continues even after that in the valley.
During the Republic Day celebrations on Friday, bone-chilling cold prevailed in northern states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. The maximum temperature in the national capital was recorded at 18.8 degrees Celsius, four notches below season's average. Meanwhile, dense fog situations hit flight operations for three hours at the Chennai airport in the south. On Saturday, the visibility was recorded 100 metres at 5.30 am which dipped below 50 metres at 8.30 am, the MeT department informed.
