Delhi's Patiala House Court Sends Journalist Upendra Rai to 14 Days Judicial Custody in Money Laundering Case

New Delhi, June 22: Delhi's Patiala House court has sent journalist Upendra Rai to 14 days judicial custody in a money laundering case related to alleged extortion and dubious financial transactions. Rai was sent to jail by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Sherawat after Enforcement Directorate (ED) did not seek more remand of him for custodial interrogation.

The Delhi based journalist was sent to ED’s custody on Thursday. Today special public prosecutor NK Matta, appearing for the ED asked the court to send Rai to jail. However, Rai on Thursday denied all the allegations in the court levelled against him by ED. The agency alleged that Rai had extorted thousands of crores of rupees.

Rai was arrested on June 8 by ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) at Tihar jail. He was arrested moments after he secured bail in a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case related to alleged extortion and dubious financial transactions. He was arrested by the CBI on May 3. The Supreme Court on May 4 had refused to interfere with his arrest by the CBI.

The ED had registered a money laundering case against him based on the FIR filed by CBI. In its FIR, the CBI has alleged that Rai's accounts received Rs 79 crore while Rs 78.51 crore was debited from it during the same period.
