New Delhi, February 22: A prisoner was found dead in suspicious circumstances behind Delhi's Naraina police station. However, the police have clarified that the deceased prisoner, who has been identified as Dalbir Singh, tried to flee from the police custody and died after jumping from the second floor of the police station.
The Station House Officer (SHO) of Naraina Police Station said, "Prisoner Dalbir Singh was produced in a court and then taken to the police station. He escaped and was found in critically injured condition behind the police station. He was rushed to hospital but was declared brought dead."
The Delhi Court had sent Dalbir for one-day police remand in case of cheating. But, Dalbir's family has termed it as a conspiracy and alleged that the police had earlier asked them for money.
"For the first time in his life, my father went missing for the entire day (20 February). We were searching for him when we received a call from the police at 9:30 p.m. that a case under section 420 has been registered against him," Vijay Singh, son of deceased prisoner Dalbir Singh said.
He added, "Police made several calls asking for money. The last call was from my father at 6:00 p.m. who asked me to come soon. I reached police station at 6:30 p.m. but gates were locked and no one was receiving calls on that number. At 9: 30 p.m., Investigation Officer (IO) of the case told me that my father fell down." The family has also alleged that Dalbir was badly beaten up by the police and was thrown from the second floor of the police station. Presently, the probe, in this case, is underway.
