New Delhi, March 29: Thousands of passengers at Delhi Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport faced inconvenience on Thursday after system failure was detected in baggage handling system. As per initial details by ANI, thousands of bags have been reported to be misplaced as of now due to the sudden technical glitch. DIAL, however, confirmed the problem and said it had risen due a high number of checked-in baggages. The Airport authorities are, however, trying to fix the snag.

As per details by Delhi International Airport (DIAL) spokesperson, the Delhi airport witnessed heavy rush and increased number of goods during the long weekend that starts today. "With the onset of a holiday weekend, Delhi Airport experienced an increased level of dangerous goods, particularly power banks & lighters, in luggage. Incident rate was 30% higher than average. It impacted baggage handling due to the manual reconciliation of the suspect baggage", the spokesperson added.

Vistara Airlines on Thursday evening took to Twitter and issued a travel update saying, "Due to heavy rush at most airports especially in the mornings, customers are advised to report at least 90 minutes prior to departure to allow sufficient time for check-in and security check".

Owing to the constant struggle by airlines to deliver the baggage to passengers on time after landing, today's system failure led to chaos among scores of passengers as they couldn't find their bags in place.

Delhi Airport's revamped Terminal serves swanky new facilities for domestic passengers.  It was earlier this week that Terminal 2 of the IGI Airport became fully operational, and IndiGo and SpiceJet partially shifted their operation there.

According to a report by PTI, several passengers took to social media to vent their anger over the “inordinate” delays in baggage clearance. One of the passengers tweeted that though she landed at her destination after several hours of delay, her bags were yet to arrive. Reports state that BJP Lok Sabha MP Hema Malini was among the passengers whose bags were also stuck in the clearance process.
