New Delhi, May 18: The Indian Metereological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a cyclone warning in five states of India and one union territory. The warning over cyclonic storm ‘Sagar’ has been issued to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and the Lakshadweep archipelago. According to the meteorological department, the Sagar Cyclone is less likely to have any significant impact on coastal Gujarat.

In its release, the IMD informed that The cyclonic storm is centred over the Gulf of Aden, about 390 km east-northeast of Yemen's Aden city and 560 km west-northwest of Socotra Islands. Due to this, gale winds speed reaching 70-80 kilometers per hour gusting to 90 kmph are very likely around the system centre covering Gulf of Aden and adjoining areas of west central and southwest Arabian Sea during the next 24 hours and gradually decrease thereafter.

The IMD issued an advisory for fishermen and advised not to venture out in the Arabian Sea during the next 48 hours as sea conditions would remain rough to very rough. “The cyclonic storm “#SAGAR” over Gulf of Aden moved further westwards with a speed of 7 kmph during past 6 hours,and lay centered at 2330 hrs IST of 17th May 2018 over Gulf of Aden near latitude 12.80N and longitude 47.50E”, IMD said.

Cyclone Sagar: All you need to know:

  1. A deep depression in the Arabian Sea has intensified into a cyclone ‘Sagar’. It is the first cyclonic storm of the season to develop in the Indian waters.
  2. Currently, the cyclonic storm ‘Sagar’ is seen over the Gulf of Aden near latitude 13.2°N and longitude 48.7°E, around 400 km east¬northeast of Aden in Yemen and 560 km west-northwest of Socotra Islands.
  3. The Cyclone Sagar is less likely to have any significant impact on coastal Gujarat, according to the meteorological department
  4. Fishermen are advised not to venture into Gulf of Aden and adjoining areas of west-central and southwest Arabian Sea during the next 48 hrs.
  5. Reports inform that the system is expected to make landfall along the coastline of Somalia by Saturday afternoon.

As per Skymet weather reports, Cyclone Sagar is likely to a make landfall in Somalia region of Africa while Ethiopia, Djibouti is predicted to be affected by the cyclonic storm. The report further informed that ‘Sagar’ is expected to remain a cyclone until tomorrow afternoon wherein the winds may increase even further.
