Mumbai, May 25: The Cyclone Mekunu which hit the Yemeni island of Socotra is likely to cause heavy showers in the coastal region of Maharashtra. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning that stating the cyclonic storm in the south-west Arabian sea will cause changes in the weather along the coastline in the next few days. Some isolated parts of the Konkan area will receive rain while the rest of Maharashtra will have no impact. A similar warning was issued to the fishermen in Goa. The lifeguard agency along the Goa's beaches was advised not to venture into the sea for at least 72 hours from Thursday, May 24.

"The Mekunu cyclone has moved away from the Indian coast, but it is likely to cause the western coast receive some heavy spells of showers," an IMD official was quoted to news agency PTI. The winds brought the temperatures in the Marathwada region, which is always hot. There was an overall drop by a couple of degree Celsius informed the Met official. "The circular winds in Bay of Bengal have caused some cloud formation over parts of Maharashtra, which has reduced the temperature and brought relief to people," the official said. The high cyclonic winds could also cause an increase in the waves during the high tide in low-lying areas.

Cyclone Mekunu had hit the Yemeni island of Socotra, causing severe flooding and damage in some areas. It is currently heading north in the Arabian sea and is expected to stop somewhere between Oman and Yemen. It has been named Mekunu, a Maldivian name, because of its origin in the Southwest Arabian Sea. Although not much weather change is seen, a rough sea is expected and the winds speed will increase. Even the tourists have been warned to stay away from the sea.
