Naya Raipur, November 1: The centre-eastern state of Chhattisgarh is celebrating its formation day. Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh on November 1, 2000. It is the tenth largest state of India with 135,194 sq kms of the area and has a population of about 25.5 million. Chhattisgarh has 27 districts and five divisions namely Bastar, Bilaspur, Durg, Raipur and Surguja. History of Chhattisgarh:

The centre-eastern state borders Madhya Pradesh in the northwest, Uttar Pradesh in the north, Jharkhand in the northeast, Maharashtra in the southwest, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in the south and Odisha in the southeast. In ancient times, it was known as Dakshina Kosala. The name Chhattisgarh became popular during the time of the Maratha Empire and was first used in an official document in 1795. The Chhattisgarh region had been part of the Chedi dynasty of Kalinga. Wishes:

President Ram Nath Kovind wished the people of Chhattisgarh and six other states - Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala state on their formation day.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his wishes to the people of Chhattisgarh on its formation day.

Celebrations:

Vice president M Venkaiah Naidu will inaugurate Chhattisgarh Rajyotsava the celebrations to mark the 17th state foundation day, in Naya Raipur today. While the celebrations will be held for five days at the sprawling Rajyotsav Sthal in Naya Raipur, the upcoming new capital, remaining 26 district headquarters will witness celebrations for three days.

Vice president Naidu will inaugurate the opening ceremony, while President Kovind will attend the valedictory function on November 5. The BJP government in the state yesterday announced names for `Rajya Alankaran' (state awards) to be given during the concluding ceremony on November 5.
