Thane, May 26: Mumbai's local trains are known as the lifeline of Mumbai and rightly so. Thousands of passengers and commuters use the services of local trains to make it to work and for other reasons in the maximum city. But, the same locals also witness death of youngsters and several people in its day to day operation. The sad truth being: Number of such accidents which proved fatal could have been avoided had passengers taken note of the safety announcements that are made to prevent commuters from indulging in deadly actions. Crossing railway tracks, standing near the door and protruding while the train is in motion are just some of the reasons. Central Railways' Thane station, a very busy station on Mumbai's local rail route, and often crowded to the hilt, has seen the death of 112 commuters in the four months of 2018.
From January 1, 2018 to May 12, 2018, a total of 112 commuters lost their lives at the Thane Railway Station. That amounts to 112 death in 101 days, which means that at least more than one life has been lost everyday. This data was made available by Central Railway Officials which produced a report that highlights commuters' safety and fatalities at the station.
The most numbers of mishaps are reported because of commuters falling of running trains or getting mowed down by trains while crossing railway tracks which is an offense that attracts punishment anyway. Instances of commuters trying to get into the running trains and losing grip resulting in loss of lives have been plenty as well.
Other than Thane, stations like Kalyan, Borivali, and Kurla have seen the highest number of fatalities in the four months. Kalyan railway station saw 110 deaths in the same period. Borivali station accounted for 107 deaths while Kurla station witnessed 80 lives getting snuffed out, according to the data.
