New Delhi, February 28: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday in a remand application sought 15-days custody of Karti Chidambaram in connection with INX Media case.  The CBI earlier this morning arrested Karti, son of former Union minister P Chidambaram at Chennai airport while he returned from his London trip.  The CBI then took the 46-year-old from Chennai to Delhi as he was to be produced before Delhi's Patiala House Court.

The Congress has termed the sudden arrest as an act 'diversionary tactic' by the BJP to reduce attention around the recent bank frauds in the country. Meanwhile, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said, “Out of the blue arrest is made today, 11 years after the so-called incident & submission of all documents. FIR till today does not mention or name Karti Chidambaram as an accused”

Karti's Counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi was quoted by ANI saying that Karti Chidambaram has no connection with the Advantage Strategic Consulting(P) Limited which allegedly received kickbacks and always cooperated with the ED and the CBI in the case. Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday said that law must take its course. “CBI will explain all details we don't wish to interfere. I'll only make one observation, when such issues are raised, what is important is the nature of evidence available against the offender must speak for itself”, he added.

Karti has been accused of taking bribes to help a television company, INX Media. The INX Media case  relates to the approval given by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) for the receipt of funds by INX Media which took place when, P Chidambaram – Karti’s father was the Union finance minister. CBI has alleged that the Foreign Exchange Management Act (Fema) was violated. However, the father and son duo have denied all charges made against them.
