Cauvery Management Board: Centre Asks Supreme Court for 2 more Weeks to Frame Draft Scheme After Failing Initial Deadline
The Centre on Friday has sought an extension of two weeks from the Supreme Court, in order to frame a draft scheme for the formation of the Board.
New Delhi, April 27: After facing the Supreme Court's criticism for not framing the scheme regarding the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) within six weeks as directed by the apex court, the Centre on Friday has sought an extension of two weeks from the Supreme Court, in order to frame a draft scheme for the formation of the Board.
The Supreme Court in an earlier instruction had directed the Centre to either form the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) in six weeks or approach the top court by March 31 if any difficulty arose. But the Centre did neither and has now asked for two more weeks to do the needful as mentioned above. The Cauvery water sharing has been a bone of contention between the state of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and the political parties in poll-bound Karnataka had observed a Bandh on April 12 on the Issue of Cauvery Management Board Formation. On April 9, the Supreme Court criticised the Centre and asked it to frame a draft scheme by May 3 for implementation of its February 16 judgment.
Earlier, on Saturday, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that the state government is against the formation of Cauvery Management Board (CMB) as it is 'unconstitutional'. In his letter, he mentioned that the Supreme Court has not directed any mechanism towards the formation of the CMB.
On February 16, a three-judge Supreme Court of India bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Amitava Roy and AM Khanwilkar pronounced the judgement on the Cauvery Water Dispute between the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala and the UT of Puducherry. The bench directed Karnataka to release 177.25 TMC of water, instead of the 192 TMC, to Tamil Nadu.
Earlier, members of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) had staged a protest in front of Parliament in connection with the formation of Cauvery Management Board (CMB). Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) working president MK Stalin had met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and put forward a proposal of mass resignation of all state MPs from the Union Cabinet to stress this point to the Centre. The apex court will now hear any matter pertaining to Cauvery dispute on May 3. (With ANI Inputs)
