Samba, May 15: A Border Security Force (BSF) constable was martyred in a ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the International Border (IB) in Jammu’s Samba sector on Monday night. The constable Devendra Singh succumbed to the injuries which he received during the ceasefire violation.

“A BSF jawan was injured during ceasefire violation in Samba on IB near Manguchak post of 173 Battalion at around 0120 hrs (1:20 am) late Monday night,” Hindustan Times quoted an intelligence official as saying. After getting injured in the violation, Singh was admitted to Military Hospital.

A 22-year-old civilian was killed in firing by Pakistani forces along the line of control (LoC) in Poonch district on May 10. BSF noticed the suspicious movement of five unidentified persons along the IB in Hiranagar sector of Kathua district. These men were believed to be terrorists as they were attempting to get into the Indian side of the border. This prompted a massive search operation and sounding of a high alert in Jammu. Army helicopters are carrying out search operations in the area.

According to a report published in Hindustan Times, till now 33 people including 17 security personnel were killed in 700 ceasefire violation incidents along the International Border this year. The crossfire incidents along the IB over the past three months have reduced considerably after the intense border confrontations in January and February, which led to many casualties. However, ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the LoC has increased drastically.
