Bihar: Journalist Sandeep Kumar Injured, While Covering Clash Incidents in Begusarai

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday announced that the family of any journalist who dies in the line of duty will receive a compensation of Rs. 4 lakh.

Another incident of attack on journalist has come to the front. According to ANI, the recent one being, Sandeep Kumar, who was injured after he was attacked, which covering a clash between two groups in Begusarai on Tuesday. Looking at the rise in the number of incidents, where journalists are repeatedly attacked and murdered, while they are doing their duty, there is a big question on the security of the scribes and their family members.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday announced that the family of any journalist who dies in the line of duty will receive a compensation of Rs. 4 lakh. Speaking at award function for Madhya Pradesh journalists, the chief minister also announced that a financial aid would also be given to journalists if they receive an injury in any kind of accident. Apart from this, Chouhan also promised to provide Rs. 50,000 to the camerapersons, incase their equipments gets destroyed in the line of duty. All these announcements were made on the back of the alleged murder of journalist Sandeep Sharma, who was reporting on illegal mining in the state. He was mowed down on March 25, by a speeding truck.

In the month of January, a murderous attack was attempted on Senior journalist Navalkant Sinha. In September last year, Gauri Lankesh, editor of the weekly Lankesh Patrike – a magazine that has been described as an “anti-establishment” publication – was shot dead at her residence in Bengaluru. Police officers in Kerala’s Varkala town in 2017, had allegedly assaulted journalist Sajeev Gopalan and stripped him in front of his wife and 15-year-old daughter because of doing a story against the police officials. On September 20, television reporter Shantanu Bhowmick was abducted and killed in Tripura, while covering a political demonstration. Reportedly, 70 journalists were killed in India between 1992 and 2016 and not a single murder case in the last 10 years has been solved. An alarming statistics comes from ‘India Freedom Report: Media Freedom and Freedom of Expression in 2017’ which highlights that, eleven Journalists were Killed, 46 were Attacked, 27 Cases of Police Action were taken in the year.
