Mumbai, August 28:  Banking services and transactions across India are expected to be disrupted today, August 28, as the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) has called for a nationwide strike. The strike is in protest against the Bank of India’s decision to charge-sheet thirteen office bearers of the bank staff union.

CH Venkatchalam, General Secretary of AIBEA, informed the media about the strike and shared a press release outlining the association’s demands from the government. “AIBEA’s call for strike on 28th August, 2024, against political attack on trade union AIBOC–NCBE–BEFI–AIBOA–INBOC–INBEF extend support,” Venkatchalam wrote in a post on X. Digital Banking Rise in India: 78% of Customers Prefer To Do Banking Digitally Through Mobile App Websites Than Cash Transactions, Says Alkami Report.

While there has been no official confirmation about the strike apart from the press release shared by Venkatchalam, customers are advised to check with their local branches of SBI, ICICI, HDFC, and other banks before planning their visits.

The unions have criticised the management’s actions against union officers, describing them as attempts to weaken and destabilise organised labour in the banking industry under the guise of national security concerns.

The strike is supported by several other bank unions, including the United Forum of Bank Unions, the All India Bank Officers Confederation, the National Confederation of Bank Employees, the Bank Employees Federation of India, and the All India Bank Officers Association.
