All Indian Villages Gain Access to Electricity on April 28, PM Narendra Modi Calls it a Historic Day for Development
Leisang village in the Senapati district of Manipur became the last Indian village to get access to electricity.
New Delhi, April 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 29 tweeted saying that " 28th April 2018 will be remembered as a historic day in the development journey of India. Yesterday, we fulfilled a commitment due to which the lives of several Indians will be transformed forever! I am delighted that every single village of India now has access to electricity." PM Modi tweeted this after the last village to be brought on the national power grid was Leisang village in the Senapati district of Manipur. It gained access to electricity at 5.30pm on Saturday. With this, every village in India has access to electricity, officially.
The Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), played a crucial role in making electricity reach all villages. With this, India moves a step towards achieving universal electricity access. The nodal agency appointed for executing the scheme is the State run Rural Electrification corporation (REC).
As per the government data, all of India’s 597,464 census villages have been electrified. As of 28 April, all the census villages have received electricity access through national grid or off grid solutions. Leisang became the last Indian village to get access to electricity. The government will now focus on families in rural and urban areas under the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (Saubhagya), to provide electricity before March 2019 as envisaged by the plan.
Earlier, Union Minister Piyush Goyal was trolled in connection to a tweet celebrating the electrification of all Indian villages. Minister Goyal was being trolled on Twitter for sharing a NASA post and celebrating the statement given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who earlier claimed that all the villages in India now have electricity and that the government has achieved what it had promised when it came to power. Minister Piyush Goyal shared the images on Twitter claiming that "India has finally been able to electrify all its villages..." and the before and after images were clearly used to distinguish Modi government's achievement from the past.
