New Delhi, June 7: Gangster Abu Salem has been sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment by Delhi's Tis Hazari Court for demanding Rupees 5 crore as protection money from a Delhi-based businessman in 2002. The gangster was convicted by Delhi's Patiala House Court on May 26 in the 2002 extortion case against him. Salem was facing trial for demanding Rs 50 million (Rs 5 crores) from Delhi businessman Ashok Gupta in 2002.
The Court on Thursday heard the arguments and then the defence lawyers and passed the order. According to reports, the court had convicted Salem in the case on May 26.
In the extortion case lodged in Delhi, it was alleged that Salem had demanded Rs. 5 crore as protection money from businessman Ashok Gupta, a resident of Greater Kailash in south Delhi, in 2002.
For the unversed, Salem is undergoing life terms in the 1995 builder Pradeep Jain murder case and the 1993 serial blasts cases. Earlier this month, Salem moved a Portuguese court and filed and application through his lawyer Manuel Luis Ferreira on May 31. He has sought to be taken to Portugal to testify.
