New Delhi, July 27: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented her 7th Union Budget without mentioning the anticipated 8th Pay Commission, leaving over 49 lakh central government employees and 67 lakh pensioners in suspense. Expectations were high that the Finance Ministry would announce the 8th pay commission during the Budget 2024 speech.

The central government on Monday confirmed that it has no proposal to constitute the 8th Central Pay Commission for revision of pay and pension of Central Government employees.

Historically, a new pay commission is established every ten years, and following this pattern, the 8th Pay Commission would be due in 2025-26, potentially resulting in a salary increase of up to 44.44%. In recent weeks, several employee unions have urged the central government to set up the 8th Pay Commission to revise basic salaries, allowances, pensions, and other benefits. However, the central government confirmed on Monday that there is no proposal to constitute the 8th Central Pay Commission for the revision of pay and pensions. Central government employees should note that the Seventh Pay Commission, established by Manmohan Singh on February 28, 2014, submitted its report on November 19, 2015, with its recommendations coming into effect on January 1, 2016.
