6th Pay Commission: West Bengal Government Gives Additional 18% Dearness Allowance to State Employees

The West Bengal government has decided to give additional 18% Dearness Allowance (DA) to state govt employees including teaching, non-teaching staff of educational institutions and rural, urban local bodies' employees. Further, 10% interim relief will be merged with the Dearness Allowance, taking the total hike to 25%, effective from 1 January.

The Dearness Allowance (DA) is a cost of living adjustment allowance paid to Government employees, Public sector employees (PSE)and pensioners in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Dearness Allowance is calculated as a percentage of an Indian citizen's basic salary to mitigate the impact of inflation on people.

The Central government on June 12 announced its decision to revise the pension of the retired faculty and the non-teaching staff in Central Universities and colleges going by the recommendation of the 7th Central Pay Commission. According to news reports, the Centre's decision will prove beneficial for close to 23 lakh retired teachers and non-teaching staff in universities.

The Financial Express reported that the implementation of the decision will help the present pensioners of the Central Universities. The decision will help around 25,000 pensioners. The increase in amount will be from the range of Rs 6000 to 18,000 according to media reports.
