Hooghly, May 1: Moupriya Mitra, a 16-year-old National level swimmer, allegedly committed suicide at her residence in Hooghly. The 16-year-old swimmer was a tenth-grade student of the Girls High School in West Bengal.
The national level swimmer reportedly hung herself on Monday. The police recovered her body and sent it to Chinsura Imambara Hospital for an autopsy. No suicide note was found from the swimmer’s residence.
Mitra had won a gold and a silver at the 2016 South Asian Aquatics Championship in Colombo. She was all set to participate in the National games in Pune in June. As part of her routine the diver had gone to practice at Chinsurah on Monday morning. She returned home in the heavy rain around 11am. After coming home she locked herself in her ground-floor room. Her parents were on the first floor at that time.
Mitra had won the highboard gold in the 2016 South Asian Aquatics Championship and a silver in the 3m springboard event. The 16-year-old swimmer won the high-board gold, the 3m springboard silver and the 1m springboard bronze in the 2016 junior national aquatics championships.
Though the family has not lodged a complaint, police have registered an unnatural death case. The body was to Chinsurah Imambara Hospital for autopsy. Police are investigating the real cause of death.
