On Wednesday, May 30, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. This was Mr. Modi’s first-ever official visit to Indonesia and discussed bilateral cooperation in a broad range of areas with Mr. Widodo, including maritime, trade and investment. During an informal meeting, Mr. Widodo shared an interesting detail about his family with Mr. Modi and told him that his grandson is also named after him.

Widodo’s newborn grandson was born on May 24 and is named Jan Ethes Srinarendra, similar to the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Srinarendra is son to Widodo’s eldest son Gibran Rakabuming and daughter-in-law Selvi Ananda. As per the Jakarta Post, Gibran explained the meaning of the child’s name as Jan meaning ‘most’, while Ethes ‘dexterous’ and Srinarendra ‘intelligent leader’. Gibran is an entrepreneur who runs several eateries under the name of Markobar.

Prime Minister Modi is on a three-nation tour to Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore and reached Jakarta on Wednesday. He began his first official engagement in the Indonesian capital by laying a wreath at the Kalibata National Heroes Cemetery and was then accorded a ceremonial welcome with a guard of honour at the Istana Merdeka – one of the six presidential palaces of Indonesia. The aim of the visit is to enhance India’s relations and engagements with all the three countries, which forms Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
